On November 4th, 2023, the ruling party in Ghana, NPP, elected Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as their candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
Bawumia, who has served as the vice president of Ghana since 2017, has ascended through the political ranks, initially starting as a running mate to the New Patriotic Party in 2008 and is now poised to potentially become the president of Ghana.
In a significant victory, Bawumia secured an impressive 61.4% of the total valid votes cast across 276 constituencies nationwide at the party headquarters, defeating rival candidates.
Expressing his satisfaction with the outcome, Bawumia stated, “It’s a victory for the rank and file of our great party and particularly for the grassroots members. I am humbled and overwhelmed. We know that the NPP is the only party that can transform Ghana. The NPP will enter 2024 united and energized.”
Bawumia’s win holds historical significance for the party as he becomes the first Muslim candidate to lead the predominantly ethnic Akan and southern-dominated party, positioning himself to address some of Ghana’s regional divisions.
While this victory marks a significant moment for Bawumia, the ultimate challenge lies ahead in the 2024 Ghana general election. The efficiency of Bawumia in leading the party during the campaigns and his potential victory remains to be seen. For now, all that can be done is to wait and observe the unfolding political landscape.
