Meet Amoako Boafo, a contemporary Ghanaian artist known for his expressive and vibrant portraits. Boafo was born and raised in Osu, located in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. He studied at the Ghanatta College of Art and Design in Accra before pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in Austria. Boafo’s work often focuses on the representation of black subjects, exploring themes of identity, race, and personal narratives.
One of his most recognized series is the “Black Diaspora” collection, where he uses a distinctive style characterized by bold colors, rich textures, and a focus on the subjects’ skin tones. Boafo’s portraits are often emotionally charged, capturing the essence and individuality of his subjects.
Boafo gained international recognition for his work, and his paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions worldwide. He has participated in major art fairs, including the Frieze Art Fair and Art Basel. His unique approach to portraiture has resonated with art enthusiasts and collectors alike. Additionally, he participated in a residency at the new Rubell Museum in Miami, Florida, and in 2020, he collaborated with Dior for their spring/summer collection.
In 2020, Boafo’s profile received a significant boost when his painting “The Lemon Bathing Suit” was acquired by the actor and art collector Leonardo DiCaprio. This acquisition further solidified Boafo’s position in the contemporary art world.
His artwork continues to be celebrated internationally, with his piece “Hands Up” (2018) being sold for $3.4 million in Hong Kong. He continues to be an inspiration, making his mark in the art world not only in Ghana but also globally.
